Djimon Hounsou Talks The Island and Gladiator Sequel

I got a chance to catch up with Djimon Hounsou while doing his rounds for the upcoming Barbershop spin-off film BEAUTY SHOP. Djimon Hounsou is a hard working man this year with CONSTANTINE, BEAUTY SHOP and now the upcoming Michael Bay sci-fi film THE ISLAND, which actually reunites him to Bay since the music video days.

Below is what he said about THE ISLAND and the chances of doing the GLADIATOR sequel.

Coming from doing a comic book film (Constantine) and comedy with Beauty Shop, can you talk a bit about the sci-fi film The Island?

Djimon Hounsou: The Island is a science fiction thriller directed by Michael Bay. It’s defiantly a rollercoaster (ride). I hope it comes out really nice and I hope that it’s also one of the best directed (films) for Michael Bay as well. Ewan McGregor is starring in it and Scarlett Johansson.

Are you done shooting?

Djimon Hounsou: I just finished.

How was it working with Scarlett Johansson?

Djimon Hounsou: It was wonderful, I’ve known her before prior to working with her so it was a delight.

What role do you play?

Djimon Hounsou: I play a special agent who is in pursuit of (Ewan and Scarlett)…Chasing them down to bring them back to the facility.

So you’re the bad guy?

Djimon Hounsou: It would seem like I’m the bad guy but you could look into it later. (Laughs) It works out pretty well.

There’s been talk about a Gladiator sequel, what’s your take on it?

Djimon Hounsou: Defiantly, they’ve been talking about it and they are trying to put it together. I over heard and I’m quite aware of them talking about it. But again we’re still waiting for a great story, and once the story is together I think that’s when everybody will come together and try to make it.
