Reddit

By Chris “El Guero” Mora on July 24, 2008

Hey party people Chris “El Guero” Mora here reporting down and dirty from Comic-Con 2008. The lines, the costumes, the freaks it is all here! It was only a few minutes after settling in my chair that Exhibit Hall H stood still. As we awaited the arrival of the Keanu Reeves and company the back wall of curtains totally collapsed causing even more delay and high drama.

All the buzz of course surrounding FOX’s upcoming movie line which includes a contemporary take on “The Day the Earth Stood Still”, the latest video to make the leap to the big screen, “Max Payne”, and a hug surprise visit from the one and only Wolverine Hugh Jackman.

THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL

Sitting in the audience you were hard pressed to find anyone old enough to probably have remembered the original film but the early scenes of this new version of the film left the audience screaming for more. The lights dim and an ear piercing screech fills the hall with only static appearing on the screens, definitely got the attention of everyone in the theater. For those they may not know this movie it is a re-make originally directed by Robert Wise and to hear the panel speak, although there are some modernizations made in the film the Director Scott Derrickson was quick to point out that the spirit of the movie and its message would remain in tact.

Visually the movie looks like a Sci-Fi lover’s wet dream with huge explosions, plenty of alien activity, and the look and feel of a true Sci-Fi film. Without giving away too much there is much to be said about one of the pivotal characters from the original film, Gort and from the extended preview show here it appears they have remained true to the original portrayal of the killer robot. This Independence day meets Twilight Zone as the movie is sure to have some interesting twists and turns not found in the original.

MAX PAYNE

Taking ass kicking into a whole new level the next video game to big screen leap MAX PAYNE looks to be not only true to the video game and story line but one hell of a movie. The hall goes dark and Led Zeppelins whole lotta love blares throughout, Mark Wahlberg stands in the snow pointing his gun at the camera and that is as about as slow as it gets for this sneak peek. For those of you familiar with the game you will appreciate the technical difficulty in bringing “bullet time” to the big screen. No wires or ropes here the camera does all the work but the actors pay the price doing a lot of their own stunts in real time as the camera slows them down. Chris “Ludachris” Bridges and Mila Kunis round out this hot cast, which fro the looks will be a major hit for Fox.

FOX GAMBLES ON WOLVERINE

What would Comic-Con be without surprise guests and true sneak peaks? Just off the plane from Australia Hugh Jackman enters the stage to thunderous applause and cheers from the crowd. Showing true grace and class his first order of business is to thank the fans of Comic-Con for starting his career. The enthusiasm and pure excitement just exudes from every pore of this guy and the crowd just loves it. Leaping down into the audience to thank the creator of Wolverine and to high five some of the fans along the way. Of course he would never think of leaving without showing the 6200 loyal fans a small glimpse of the freshly wrapped movie. From the look of the extended preview this movie is going to be every bit successful as the other X-Men movies full of new mutants on either side of good and evil. The crowd erupts in ovations as we see not one but tow different glimpses of Gambit one of the most notably absent of the X-Men for the first three films.
