Green Lantern casting update

El Mayimbe here…

So yes the word on the Green Lantern is that it is moving along and that rehearsals should start in February for a Spring 2009 shoot.

Earlier, I had received word from someone that the Green Lantern choices have been nailed down and that they were considering Seth Green, Justin Long, and David Boreanaz.

I was like WTF?!

Confused, I went to my guys to get to the bottom of what is going on and to see if it was true.

Thankfully, hell no, not true.

BUT…I did manage to find out something.

You know who the studio wants to wear Abin Sur’s ring and take up the mantle of The Green Lantern?

From my trusted source within the WB, I’m hearing…

RYAN GOSLING

ryan-greenlantern

Personally, I think a really hot choice!  Ryan Gosling is a dope actor and would kill the role. Remember folks that he is an Oscar nominee.  Green Lantern/Hal Jordan in the script is 27 and currently Ryan is 27 (his 28th birthday is next month).

Mind you, I don’t know if an offer has been made, and if WB is into it now with Ryan’s people, but once again Gosling is who I’m hearing the WB wants for Hal Jordan.

Hal Jordan is a fictional character, a DC Comics superhero. He is the second Green Lantern and arguably the most famous hero to bear that name. Created by John Broome and Gil Kane, he first appeared in Showcase #22 (October 1959).

Hal Jordan's revamp as the Green Lantern was one of many old DC Comics characters to emerge in the Silver Age of comics. Like many of his contemporaries, Hal Jordan became more identified with his heroic identity than the previous iterations of the characters. Controversy erupted among comic book readers in 1994 when Hal Jordan became supervillain Parallax and Kyle Rayner replaced him as the Green Lantern.

Jordan underwent a number of further changes in the 1990s including dying and later returning as a new incarnation of The Spectre. Hal Jordan returned to the role of Green Lantern in 2004's Green Lantern: Rebirth miniseries and is currently the protagonist of the current volume of Green Lantern.

So what do you guys think?

In the meantime, you can follow my updates on TWITTER.

Boreanaz has the swagger, the looks and he flat out would be an AWESOME Hal Jordan...come on people, Hal's a badass and you need someone who is also a badass-Boreanaz is that someone. Done.

Nathan Fillion has the potential to be the perfect Hal. Ryan would make a better Robin... Honestly.

  • Overcome Great Fear

Ryan Gosling doesnt look like the guy that can overcome great fear and be Green Lantern, im sorry. The guy from the Notebook playing Green Lantern, give me a break!

  • Boreanez

He fits the physical description of Hal Jordan better than any other and he's a great actor.

  • For Hal.....

I think Gosling is a great choice, he can play any role given him. Nathan Fillion would be a perfect fit for the character humor and drama-wise, though if you do the math, he will be 40 when they release the film, if they are looking for a franchise and THEY ARE. They might want to cast younger. I love Fillion, don't get me wrong, Serenity is in my top 10 movies of all time. Perhaps if they get him ripped, hes already in great shape but it'll take some time to get him there. Personally I'd love to him do it, maybe they are going for an Ironman type casting choice for the older seasoned actor choice. If they go younger, I'd like to see Sam Worthington as Hal. feedback

  • Hal Jordan...

I don't know about Ryan Gosling? I'd rather see Josh Hartnett play Hal Jordan.

  • are you serious?

First off Bale is not a small guy. He may not be towering but the guy is ripped. He was literally skin and bones in the movie The Machinist which was a phenomenal performance and movie. Other than that he has been ripped fuel in everything he has been in other than Rescue Dawn. what are some of you watching. I think Gosling can play the part, the guy does have an edge to him look at the movies he has been in and watch something other than The Notebook, both actors are underrated.

  • Ryan..No

I agree that Ryan is a great actor, but goes not carry the swagger, speech, or all around attitude that a "Hal Jordan" should have. He is just to "soft" in his stage presence. I like the Nathan idea, but to offer up alternatives...I think Ben Browder could carry it but he might be a little "short" for the role. Maybe Tahmoh Penikett. He is 6ft 3 has the attitude, build is already made his mark in the Sc-fi with Battlestar, Smallville, Sg-1 and others. He is only a few years older than the role calls for but I think he could pull it off

I think Michael Hall would be good for GL. He is already playing an anti-hero. And he looks the part.

  • Nathan Fillion

After seeing that PGPorn clip, I have to cast my vote for Nathan Fillion--awesome actor, and most definitely fits the Hal Jordan mold. As to baddies: Sinestro!!! PS: Hey, Bill O'Reillys out there, stop misquoting! I never claimed Welling was a great, or good, or fair, bad, horrible actor. What I said was that Tom Welling AND Reeves are great examples of the true Superman body type. Having said that, I would much rather have a great actor than an idiot who resembles a character, but I honestly believe in this fuckin gigantic sea of actors, you can't find someone that satisfies both requirements? My (arguable) claim is that WB WANTS a scrawny-bodied, baby-faced actor, e.g., Routh, the Justice League cast, and to a far lesser degree, Bale.

Author: A Fellow Frijol | Permalink

  • You don't get nominated...

...for a FREAKING OSCAR if you are just an OK actor. And yes go rent The Machinist and see how scrawny Bale go, he was tiny. Then right after that he did Batman Begins. Don't tell me Gosling couldn't put on muscle. I would rather have a good actor than Tom Welling any day.

Nathan Fillion could be believable. Mark Paul Gosselar and Casper Van Dien could do the roles too.

Watched "Criminal Minds" last night and Thomas Gibson is the guy who should wear the ring. He was practically singing "No evil shall escape my sight"

  • Nathan Fillian

I think Ryan Gossling is a fine actor and would probably be a good choice. But the fan boy in me would love to see Nathan Fillian in the role. I think he's an underratted actor.

He is one of the most talented young actors alive today, and anyone who doubts that needs to see True Believer or Lars and the real girl. Get some taste, and then voice your opinion.

Ryan Gosling is a good actor, no doubt. My concern would be the villain, which seems to be the litmus test for every GOOD comic-to-movie adaptation. It was the Joker that made TDK and litany of non-descript villains that undermined Spidey 3. Since I'm not the biggest GL fan, who is an adequate villain that would strengthen this film?

    Author: Lamont Harper | Permalink

  • Hmm!

Well this is interesting. I don't think ryan can portray GL, he just doesn't look mature enough or demeanor to play Hal Jordan. Then again everybody taught Heath Ledger wouldn't pull off joker demeanor. Hal jordan is character with many depth, that can take on being a leader and an icon to other GL. David Boreanaz is old but would resemble Hal more than any one of these guys.

    Author: Movie Buff | Permalink

  • ugh

Gosling? No way ... sorry. I've been a huge GL fan since I was a kid, and he couldn't pull it off. There has to be a certain physical presence. Ben Browder physically could have pulled it off if he were younger. Nathan Fillion I'd accept in the role. He's got to be someone you believe would be a daredevil test pilot, a guy that would throw a punch in a bar, but at the same time, fiercely devoted to protecting life. Gosling ... ehh ... no.

    Author: jayntampa | Permalink

  • Jon Hamm!

Spitting image of Hal Jordan! He is a little older... But he should definetly play GL.

    Author: weaponx16 | Permalink

  • Riddler

Gosling should be cast by WB as the Riddler for the Batman franchise. That's a better fit and use of his talents. Henry Cavill would make a good Hal Jordan if he can do the American accent. Showed he can act in the Tudors and has the superhero quality to him.

  • Wrong Permalink!

David Boreanaz is like 40 years old, he cant play a 26 or 27 year old guy. And he is only 5'8" or 5'9"

    Author: MrSammich | Permalink

  • Better Idea

Sam Worthington would be a fine pick, sure he is an Aussie, but he can probably fake the American accent, most non-American actors can anyway. But he has the right look and size, plus he is already involved in two major action movies with the soon to be released Terminator Salvation and James Cameron's Avatar. Plus, I really can't see Gosling in the green tights, or myself rooting for him, his portrails of charaters have always been a little flat in my opinion.

  • @Voltron Shakespheare

I don't think being able to create a silhouette of shit from a ring and your imagination qualifies you as a badass.

    Author: Choi | Permalink

  • Are you a moron?

Since when is Christian Bale skinny? Have you seen "Batman Begins" or "American Psycho"? Bale lost a little weight for "The Dark Knight", because the suit required more quickness and less bulk. Also, Brandon Routh is pretty built even though he's a terrible Superman. Do you remember how skinny Christopher Reeves was? But then again, once you praised Tom Welling you lost all credibility.

  • emerald dawn

I think you're all missing the point of why they are looking to a serious dramatic actor. The green lanterns' most powerful weapon is their imagination. Generally speaking of the current lot of hollywood actors out there, you're not going to find an actor who can bench over 300 lbs. with chops the to pull off a role that finds a flawed Hal Jordan from the emeral dawn story line. they're looking to make it a tent pole franchise like Batman not Daredevil or Ghost Rider. outside of Jake Gyllenhaal, it's a good choice.

Did you really describe Ryan Gosling as a "dope actor"? He IS an ok actor but "dope" is not a proper descriptive term coming from a paid journalist.

Yea, Gosling sucks, dude. He can't act for shit, and when you say he'd "kill" the role, I think you're right, but in a different regard. Seriously, this is Hal Jordan, one of the biggest badasses in comic history. I don't think the lameass from the Notebook is the best bet here. Seriously. Fuck that.

  • Response to WTF

Exaggeration on my part, but yes, Bale is a shorter, thinner framed man. Not muscular. It seems like I need to say this: I am NOT bad-mouthing TDK in any shape or form, awesome film. At this point, I am only critiquing a creative choice, and attempting to understand why WB (and I'm assuming its a WB move) wants it that way.

  • Ryan Gosling...

is a great, great actor and will probably do a fantastic job if casted. But i have to say, i really don't get WB's current fascination w/ casting scrawny types as superheroes: Routh, Bale, and now, ..Gosling? And don't get me FN started on the casting for that crap-in-the-making "Justice League"--the guy from the OC, seriously? I've always imagined those respective superheroes as brawny and square-jawed, as represented by Reeves and Tom Welling. (And no, I'm not insinuating I want some idiotic hulk like a young Schwarzenegger or something). Bale is a fine actor, whose done amazing work portraying Batman, but he is frankly not the Batman of my imagination. Sure, younger actors are one thing, I can see the benefit in terms of longevity, but the build doesn't have to necessarily be...nerd hipster, does it?
