Origin of the Cloverfield monster?

The guys over at Film School Rejects got word from the director of Cloverfield as to the monster's strange origin:

After seeing Cloverfield today, audiences around the country are still asking what the hell is the deal with the monster? Where the hell did it come from.

Well, Film School Rejects Brian Gibson and Chris Ilcisko got the inside track on the monster’s origins from the director Matt Reeves himself. If you watch the movie closely, you can see a hint of where the monster comes from.

No, not in the attack footage. Not in the news footage. In the footage from April that was accidentally erased by Hud.

This original footage doesn’t just include the budding relationship between Rob and Beth. It also has the “first” appearance of the monster.
